But it wasn't easy...
Fede spent many years stressed and overwhelmed and doubting himself, because...
- Fede didn't know how to say "No" to more work and responsibilities. He thought that if he said no to more work, they would think he was lazy, not a team player, or simply not good at his job, because he couldn't handle the load. He thought he would be fired, or not get a raise, bonus or promotion.
- He didn't know the business culture, slang or terms, and was afraid to ask for clarifications, because he believed he should already know all of those terms!
- He was afraid to ask questions whenever he didn't understand the ask or what someone said for fear of judgement. He thought they would think he wasn't good at his job or a more junior level, so he ended up making assumptions, which never helped!
- He was afraid to speak up in meetings for fear of using the wrong words, coming across as too junior or inexperienced, as English was not his first language. He thought people would judge him.
- He didn't know how to connect, persuade or influence others into working with him to deliver a project, especially when they didn't report to him directly.
- He felt guilty and uncomfortable asking others to do work they were supposed to do, asking for favours (even though he always did favours to others), or simply asking for vacation time or time off for a personal appointment, even when he was working lots of overtime to always deliver.
- He believed he was not good at negotiating or critical thinking, and that you either had it in you or not. Fede didn't know these were skills that could be easily developed when you know how.
- He couldn't challenge leaders or people higher in the organization hierarchy, even if they were making the wrong decisions! That was completely out of the question. He was raised knowing you never challenge authority. A big mistake that cost him years of opportunities, connections and money.
- He was uncomfortable disagreeing with others and dealing with difficult people, making it harder and more stressful to deliver documents, solutions to issues, or projects.
- He was too polite for North Americans, using indirect language, speaking politely or deferentially, while the North American business people prefer direct, assertive communication. This created barriers with others and presented big challenges as he felt North Americans were rude because and non-cooperative.
- He had challenges promoting himself and talking about his achievements. He expected leaders to note them and call them out, and then, to congratulate him and give him the raises, promotions and bonuses he thought he deserved, which didn't come. He learned the hard way the meaning of the expressions "toot your own horn" and "if you don't ask, you don't get."
These challenges and many others caused him to miss raises, promotions and opportunities.
These limitations robbed him of years of progress and benefits, such as getting coached and mentored earlier in his career, if he had just asked, etc.
